Turning your interests into a business

How I escaped the rat race and make a living talking about the things I love

I started going to the gym in my last semester at university.

That was in January of last year.

I enjoyed going to the gym so much that it was all I could think about.

It also didn’t help that the algorithm was pushing David Goggins videos like crazy (he made me want to workout even more).

So I did the natural thing and asked my gym buddies who’ve been working out for years, if it was ok for me to train 2x a day.

All of them said, “No, you’re going to damage your nervous system.”

But that itch just wouldn’t go away.

So what did I do?

I started working out 2x a day. But I had to be smart about it.

Since I had a lot of things going on during the day the only times I was free to workout were 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.

I started waking at 5:30 a.m. to go workout and I’d go to the gym again after a long day at uni.

Everyone looked at me thinking I must be taking something to get all that extra energy.

They were right. I had something most people don’t. That’s obsession.

I found something that “consumed” me.

A few months went by and I got my “dream” body. That obsession started fading away.

Until one day, I was eating my dinner and as a perfectly normal human being, I was watching YouTube.

And a Dan Koe video popped up. “Become a Digital Renaissance Man (And Join The New Rich)”.

I was hooked.

Before I knew it I just binge-watched 4 hours of Dan Koe videos.

It’s because of him I started posting on X. Why?

Because what he was talking about sounded too good to be true.

  • Work 4 hours a day

  • Make $100,000 per month

  • All while talking about the things you love

I had to give it a try.

The first 4 months were hell:

  • Late nights

  • Engaging 24/7

  • Learning every day

  • Doubting myself if it’s all worth it

All that effort just to be at 150 followers and I made a whopping $0.

But honestly, I didn’t care (that much). I was having too much fun writing tweets, threads, and newsletters.

But I still wanted more. I wanted to have my ideas heard.

So I spent $2,000+ on online courses and learned how to write better.

4 months later,

  • Met amazing creators online

  • “Working” for less than 2 hours a day

  • Making $700 per month talking about the things I love

All I think about now is writing:

  • Tweets

  • Threads/LF

  • Newsletters

I keep asking myself “How can I write this as a tweet?”

Look, I’m not telling you this personal story just for fun.

I’m telling you this because if you want to find success as a creator you can’t be in it for the money.

If you are in it for the money then you’re going to be disappointed. It’ll take you a longer time to monetize and once you do, you’ll make much less than what you expected (at least in the beginning).

It’s a much better approach to start creating content about the things you love. Better yet, about the things you’re obsessed with.

A person who loves walking will walk further than the person who walks because of the destination.

Lao Tzu

When you’re obsessed everything becomes an idea for content.

An idea turns into a tweet.

A tweet turns into a thread.

A thread turns into a newsletter.

A newsletter turns into a lead magnet.

A lead magnet turns into a paid product/service.

A paid product/service turns into a multi-million dollar business.

The future belongs to those who are obsessed.

Because obsession bends reality.

The Building Blocks For Turning Your Obsession Into A Profitable Business

1) A topic you can’t shut up about

You need to know that thing you can’t stop thinking about.

Ask yourself: “What is a topic you can speak for hours without ever getting bored?”

For me, that’s the creator economy and online writing.

You can be confident knowing that if you find something interesting others will as well.

Use yourself as the Ideal Customer Avatar and Ideal Audience Member.

There are millions of people who are just like you and are interested in what you like.

When you write to yourself, you’re writing to millions.

2) Steal Like A Pro

Everything that you can say has already been said online.

The only way you can stand out is by remixing different ideas and topics together.

The biggest creators are stealing from each other every day.

They steal:

  • Ideas

  • Designs

  • Products

But they add their own spin to it.

My favorite way of making something unique is by sharing a personal experience or perspective.

I’m convinced that if everyone talked about the things they’re obsessed with and shared their experiences, perspectives, and stories there would never be a saturated market in the creator economy.

3) A Brand With Depth

Most people on X tell you to “niche down” and be hyper-focused on a single topic (cuz apparently, that’s how you grow now).

But I disagree.

I’ve been growing faster as soon as I stopped talking about “writing” specifically.

I talked about my:

  • Beliefs

  • Stories

  • Lessons

  • Thoughts

  • Experiences

People saw themselves in those posts.

Once they start following you, for YOU, they’ll listen to what you have to say.

Cuz look, people don’t buy from the best creator.

They buy from a creator who they like and trust.

But wait… this sounds like we’re branching out of our “obsession”.

Yes, we are.

Do you only get the feeling about doing that ONE thing 24/7? Or do you also get the feeling of doing other things?

I’m guessing you get sometimes get the urge to want to do other things as well.

Remember:

Use yourself as the Ideal Audience Member.

People follow people.

4) Iterating On Your Best Ideas

My favorite band (Cigarettes After Sex) is releasing the same hit song over and over again.

All of their songs sound similar to each other and people love it.

The same goes for Drake, The Weeknd, and your favorite artist.

They do this because they know that’s what the people want and they also know that it will work, that’s why they keep releasing the same hit songs (with minor changes).

We should be doing the same with our content.

Look behind the “Big Idea” of the posts that do well.

Then learn how to say them in a different way and perspectives.

Learn how to say 1 thing in 1,000 different ways.

5) Value Ladder

The easiest and best way to monetize your brand is by creating a value ladder.

Here’s what my value ladder looks like:

  • Tweets

  • Threads/Long-form post

  • Lead magnets

  • Newsletter

  • Impulse buy products

  • Flagship products

The point of the value ladder is to take people from being strangers to paying happy customers.

You do that by:

  • Overdelivering

  • Solving their problems

  • Being genuine with them

And for the love of god, always be genuine with people.

They can smell it when you’re doing it for the money.

I landed more clients by being genuine, helping them, and not expecting anything in return.

Trust me, good karma does exist in this world.
