Are you my younger sibling?

Ever since I was a kid I would pray to god and would ask if he could gift me a younger sibling.

You see, I am the youngest one of all my siblings, and loved the feeling that I would get whenever they would take care of me or teach me something.

I used to look up to them.

And I wanted to have someone with whom I could help, teach, and share my wisdom.

Spoiler: I never had a younger sibling.

But what I did have is friends who I considered to be my younger siblings (depending on their mental age) and cousins who are 10 years younger than me.

Whenever they come to visit us in our family gatherings they'd almost always come and talk to me, cuz I'm the chill cousin, or it might be because I let them play with my Nintendo and PC.

But I'll let you decide.

Now, this isn't an email where I tell you a secret that I only kept to myself.

But rather, I'm telling you this because when it comes to writing online a personal touch and connecting with your fan is a big thing.

It never fails to amaze me how being genuine and personal in your emails and content can skyrocket your success.

You probably felt that my emails aren't like the typical emails that you get from other creators, where they sound super serious, cold, and flat-out like they're your parent or teacher.

There's something about writing on a Google Document that makes it so professional and "dead".

But rather you felt that these emails and tweets I write are more like having a genuine conversation with a person who cares about you.

That's because whenever I write my emails I like to imagine that I'm having a conversation with my younger sibling.

That's because I made my One True Fan my imaginary younger sibling (aka you).

Before I started writing this email I imagined my younger sibling.

He's smart, excited to learn, and an all-round cool sibling to have.

Hell, I even used to end my emails with "Until next time, as your big brother, I will be watching you from afar, and I’ll be cheering for you."

coming to think of it, that was a little creepy lol.

When you write to your One True Fan and imagine them as a real person, your words will feel more natural. Writing becomes easy.

Now, your One True Fan might be your previous self, a friend, or a family member.

Whoever your One True Fan is, you should always keep them in mind whenever you write.

It feels like a cheesy hack, but it’s effective.

You see, the best writer isn't the one who uses the most complex and sophisticated words, but rather the one who connects with their reader the most.

Especially if you're building your creator business, you need to connect with your audience (otherwise, how will you grow an audience and monetize?).

Hope this helps,

Hussain "David Goggins Wannabe" Ibarra.
